Put3ska: Pioneers of Filipino Ska
Put3ska, a Filipino ska band formed in 1993, carved a unique niche in the local music scene with its playful name—a wordplay on the Filipino phrase putres ka (“damn you”) and the music genre ska. The band proudly branded itself as a “60s-oriented, 90s ska band,” heavily influenced by Jamaican and British ska traditions.
The Rise of Put3ska
Officially launched in 1994, Put3ska made a memorable debut with their self-titled album, Put3ska. The album featured the hit single Manila Girl, which skyrocketed to popularity, earning the band a gold record award. Their breakthrough year saw them sweep the 1995 NU Rock Awards, taking home accolades for Best New Artist, Best Live Act, and Best Vocalist for Myra Ruaro. The music video for Manila Girl gained international recognition, securing a nomination for Viewers’ Choice for Asia at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards.
In 1996, the band released their second album, Manila’s Finest. This record showcased original compositions, including songs in Tagalog, and covered classics like Millie Small’s My Boy Lollipop and Gloria Jones’ Northern Soul anthem Tainted Love.
Transitions and Celebrations
In 1998, vocalist Myra Ruaro departed to form The Brownbeat All Stars, leaving Marizel Serangelo to fill her shoes. Despite changes, the band continued to thrive, marking their sixth anniversary with a celebratory concert at the Music Museum on September 1, 2000.
On May 24, 2019, fans rejoiced as Put3ska reunited for a one-night concert at the same iconic venue in Greenhills.
Legacy in Philippine Music
Former vocalist Myra Ruaro remains a prominent figure in the music industry. She appeared in the segment Bawal Judgmental on Eat Bulaga, the longest-running variety show on GMA Channel 7, alongside other iconic Filipino artists. The lineup included Marc Tupaz of Shamrock, Cookie Chua of Color It Red and Apartel, McCoy Fundales of Orange & Lemons and Kenyo, Jinky Vidal of Freestyle, and Medwin Marfil of True Faith.
Put3ska’s vibrant ska rhythms and nostalgic charm have left an indelible mark on Filipino music, embodying the energy of a bygone era while continuing to inspire new generations.
